We help people
with anxiety and depression flourish
.
But is this the whole picture?
Conversely, there is also evidence suggesting that social media can have a positive influence on mental health for some people.
The pandemic has caused significant sorrow and anxiety for many. Yet, social media has allowed us to stay connected with loved ones, share important information with our communities, and stay informed about the latest health developments. In times of stress, social media can act as a unifying force, helping to reduce feelings of isolation.
Beyond the global pandemic, there are moments in life when individuals may face depression or anxiety. Many people struggling with mental health feel they lack a reliable support system within their immediate circle.
In such instances, individuals often turn to the internet for support and encouragement from online mental health communities, where they can find the information, comfort, and guidance they need.
A study by Michigan State University, published in the Journal of Computer-Mediated Communication, found that social media use can benefit mental health. The researchers analyzed data from over 13,000 relationships among adult participants, revealing that social media users were 63% less likely to experience mental health crises such as anxiety and depression.
The study found that individuals who use social media to connect and share information, even daily, tend to experience positive mental health outcomes. Conversely, those who develop an unhealthy attachment—such as constantly checking their feeds due to a fear of missing out—often face negative mental health effects.
In summary, the key is mindful social media use. If someone has developed unhealthy habits leading to anxiety or depression, seeking therapy may be beneficial.
